I've only ever been a Leeds fan. I once had a second team when i was 7 or 8 (the shame), but it has always been Leeds for me, always will be. I went to my first Leeds match with my uncle Pete when I was about 9. We were playing Liverpool and we had the last remnants of a decent Leeds team before we plundered into the second division for what seemed like decades. We went 1-0 up, Ray Hankin scored, but then the scousers levelled in the last minutes. Devastating to a wee nipper at his first game, but like they say, isn't that why it's such a great game? Of course being a Leeds fan, having a win taken away in the last minute was a mere morsel of misery compared to what was coming.
I started going to Elland Road on a regular basis whilst at college in York. It was the mid eighties. My brother and I would get smashed on John Smiths on the train down, a couple of Tetleys at the station bar, then the bus to the ground for around 2pm. Into the old Kop (the left side thanks) and go nuts for touch more a couple of hours. Scoring meant ending up in a completely different part of the stand and taking half an hour to get back to where we were, unless we scored again of course. The best buzz ever.
Fanchants.com was born from the genuine love of terrace banter and witty chants. It's really a labour of love with quite a few people involved in pulling it all together. What we are trying to create is a library of chants, a meeting place to discuss chants and put forward new chants, which we will publish.
A few mates and I have recorded over 400 chants (plus some we can't publish). We've been everywhere to record them, well we haven't, but it seems like we have. There's been some interesting moments, we've been in a few ends where they've been singing "We all hate Leeds scum", all in a days work you would think, but it is bizarre being the hated focus of the chant and been 'undercover'. We also can't jump around when a goal is scored (I'm sure you understand), so we've stuck out like sore thumbs at times.
This blog will be a place where we will list some of the funniest and latest chants that our visitors send to us, generally discuss football and in particular the plight of Leeds United, as well as blatantly promote our website fanchants.com. Hopefully we can get the best library of chants listed on the web.
Listen to Leeds chants and songs.
